Comment on 10 Candlewood Lake Boating Safety Tips by rachel frampton https://www.candlewoodlakelife.com/blog/2020/06/24/10-boating-safety-tips-for-candlewood-lake/#comment-94 Wed, 16 Mar 2022 04:30:54 +0000 https://candlewoodlakelife.com/blog/?p=16#comment-94 If I were to go on a fun boat trip, I would make sure to look at boat tours that may guide me. Thank you for sharing here as well the importance of having the boat inspected first. I also agree with you that there must be a coast guard around.

I’ve fished here with my dad years ago and was in the area today as my Mother and I hiked Bear Mountain Reservation. At the trail map it states how Candlewood was created, which in turn is what sparked my interest to lead me here! Thank you so much for this education on our CT history!

When the Shores was still part of New Fairfield, not Brookfield, and children had to take taxis around the Lake to go to school. I found this article to be a useful early history of Candlewood Lake…maybe add a bit about all those imported Canadian lumberjacks, hired to clear-cut the future Lake bottom?

Use to scuba dive in the Lake in the mid-1960’s, when the water was still clear – curse the lack of enforced sewer systems and the overuse of fertilizers by some lakeside properties! Unfortunately, did not have an underwater film camera back then. Dived on the area reported to be Jerusalem, but other than a stone foundation and what looked to be an old roadway, not much evidence. Pre-GPS, of course.

In recent history, the real change in the area and for the Lake, some good but mostly bad (think algae-blooms), dates from the advent of I-84. Soon were gone activities like the informal Candlewood Lake youth softball league, including the Candlewood Shores, Candlewood Knolls, Candlewood Isle (had no field), and Candlewood Lake Club. We’d have home-and-away softball games, using boats not cars to transport the youth teams. Gawk, that uphill run from home to 1st base at the Knolls field, a field that was rockier than a stone quarry! The really short left field at the Lake Club; it taught us the early lesson of taking an upward cut at pitches. When (and why) was Boat Bay rebranded as Echo Bay? The thrill of plunging off Diving Rock on Pine Island (not “Stay Out” private at that time). The PBYs practicing their water landings. And the fantastic Boy Scout Camp Mawehu, up along the Sherman branch of the Lake (and the Girl Scout camp across the Lake), now vanished. The long-gone now Danbury State Fair. Alas! the loss of the White Turkey Inn with its swans, I knew it well! Replaced by strip malls and a tsunami of new arrivals, so that now in the summer one can almost walk across the Lake on the decks of weekend boats.

It is so true, you can’t go home again!

Music blasting, red solo cups in every hand and not a mask to be found.

They drifted off anchor right into the adjacent island and no one even noticed or seem to care (rentals).
Residents will have to pick up the garbage but most of it flocked south once they woke from their white claw headaches.
Downwind smelled like the perfume dept at Macy’s mixed w/deodorant showers
If you were there, you know this is 100% truth.
